Wetzikon to obtain heat from waste incineration in Hinwil from 2025
From autumn 2025, Fernwärme Wetzikon AG will purchase heat from the KEZO waste incineration plant in Hinwil. Two contracts regulate the heat supply for the next 50 years.
Fernwärme Wetzikon AG concludes two contracts with the Zweckverband Kehrichtverwertung Zürcher Oberland (KEZO) for the supply of heat from the waste incineration plant for the next 50 years. Fernwärme Wetzikon AG, which was founded at the end of 2023, is owned by the city of Wetzikon and Energie 360° AG.
According to a press release, this concerns the heat supply contract, which regulates the amount of heat and prices. The other is the district heating transport contract, which sets out the technical framework conditions for the purchase and transport of heat.
From autumn 2025, the contracts will ensure that Fernwärme Wetzikon has the heat it needs to supply large parts of the city with district heating from KEZO. The heat will be transported to Wetzikon via the planned district heating transport pipeline along Rapperswilerstrasse and transferred to the municipal district heating network at the energy centre near the artificial ice rink, according to the press release.
Planning for the transport pipeline and the energy centre is already well advanced. Construction of both facilities is set to begin at the end of 2024. The planning of the supply network and the acquisition of customers in the first supply areas are currently underway. Customers in the supply area from the energy centre onwards are to be supplied with heat from autumn 2025.
At the beginning of the supply, the heat will still come from the existing waste incineration plant in Hinwil. Heat will then be supplied from the new plant from around 2030 once it has been completed. Detailed information on the district heating project is available on a separate website.
