All in one

Zürich, June 2022

A new development with rental apartments, hotels, restaurants, shops and an underground car park is being built in the center of Kloten.

With an eight-story “tower”, the BGS & Partner architects in Kloten set a strong accent on the south-east corner of the new town square as a counterpart to the striking town house. According to the project description, this makes it possible to better grasp the somewhat oversized square: “At the same time, the corner building dominates Schaffhauserstrasse and is also an eye-catcher in this direction. By slightly turning away from the building line, we are pursuing the same goals.»

Due to the slight buckling of the façade on the town square, a protected front area is created in the middle. This can be used by the restaurant for outdoor seating. This measure enables the terrain to be adapted and the restaurant to be better able to relate to the outside. At this point, a narrow “alley” with a staircase leads to the semi-private inner courtyard, which is much smaller and more intimate.

The angled facades ensure that the apartments are always oriented towards the open space and allow the depth of the building to be increased. A private green area is planned in front of the apartments, which are located directly on the courtyard. Parts of the courtyard are intended as a meeting place for all residents and as a large playground for the children.

The buildings should rather appear as a group of buildings that are crowded together on the street and not as a uniform “large form”. Therefore, the buildings are graded in height and have no common building lines. This facilitates the subdivision and emphasizes the autonomy of the various partners in the consortium.
